There are an increasing number of ways to try out Android applications on your Windows desktop or laptop. But of the various methods I’ve sampled, none combined complete access to Android’s basic functions with ease-of-access quite like American Megatrends’ AMIDuOS.
AMIDuOS is not available for Mac but there are some alternatives that runs on macOS with similar functionality. The most popular Mac alternative is BlueStacks, which is free. AMISuOS is an Android emulator for PC, which is also called DuOS. Its runs on the Lollipop version and is one if the perfect emulator system. Unlike a program like Bluestacks, which is all about getting specific app functionality on the desktop, AMIDuOS is a complete virtual machine of (mostly) stock Android, recreating the interface and experience of a full Android tablet. Step One: Download and Install the Program
AMIDuOS is commercial software, so it’s hosted on the American Megatrends website. For the sake of this guide, we’ll try the Pro version of the software, based on Android 5.0—it’s free for a month of trial usage, after which it costs $15, or $10 for the older “lite” version based on Android 4.0.
Make sure you download the software in either 32 or 64-bit, as applies to your version of Windows. The installer is inside a zipped file, so you’ll need to extract it using Windows’ default tool or your third-party application of choice.
Double-click the DuOSInstaller.exe file in the extracted folder to start the installer process. Click “Done” in the window when it finishes.
Step Two (Optional): Install Google Apps
Once the installer finishes, it should open up a browser tab that gives you instructions on a secondary installation package, Google Apps. This additional installation allows you to use the Google Play Store to download applications directly to the Android virtual machine, among other Google apps like Search and Gmail.
Start up the DuOS program—it should be in your Start menu. while it runs in the background, Click the appropriate link for the version of AMIDuOS you downloaded. If you followed the instructions above, it will be the latest version available. Save the ZIP file, right-click it, and select “Apply to DuOS.” You’ll see a Windows notification that says “Updating DuOS.” Wait for the process to finish in the DuOS window.
Step Three: Configure the Virtual Machine
Press the Start button or key and type “DuOS.” Click “DuOS Configuration Tool.” This program lets you adjust the various parameters of the Android virtual machine. In particular, you’ll find:
- General: This screen offer the basic controls for the screen size, and manual options to share access to specific files and folders in Windows. Unless you need to use Android in a small-sized window instead of full screen or access specific files from the Android interface, you can ignore most of these options. The Full Screen option will let the Android interface cover the entire screen, with the power and minimize buttons next to the default Android navigation buttons at the bottom of the interface. The Normal Screen option adds a Windows menu button at the top of the screen with close, minimize, and rotate buttons. The Small Screen option is the same, only with a scaled window.
- Advanced: this screen allows the user to expand the amount of RAM shared with the Android VM. I recommend at least 2GB (2000 MB), assuming you can spare it from the rest of your system—you shouldn’t use more than half of your system’s memory for the virtual machine. The Moderate Resolution allows you to let Windows instead of the VM set the visual scaling, and “Manual DPI” lets you adjust the virtual size of the VM’s screen. “FPS” will show a frames per second count in the window. “Simulated Network” lets the VM use your main computer’s Internet connection—you’ll generally want to leave it enabled.
- Devices: This page allows the VM to access the Camera, Gamepad, GPS, and Serial Port of your main PC (if it has them). Note the “camera swap” option on the first tab: it can swap the front and rear camera inputs on tablets like the Surface.
- Logs: This option lets you access the logs from Android’s system.
- Properties: Allows the user to change the name and IMEI of the virtual device, which can be handy for services that detect them, like the Play Store.
Click Apply when you’re done.
Step Four: Start Using DuOS
From here, you can start the program just like any other. If you’ve installed Google Apps in Step Two, you’ll start with a setup process including logging into your Google account. Just follow the on-screen instructions.
At any time, you can click the minimize button or press Alt+Tab on your keyboard to get back to Windows. Most Android apps should run fine in the AMIDuOS interface, though hardware-intensive applications will be sluggish. It’s a great way to try out apps in a larger interface.

American Megatrends gets into the Android emulator game. But is it worth $10?
There are plenty of reasons to run an Android emulator on your PC. Maybe you want to test-drive the OS before buying your first smartphone or tablet. Perhaps you’re looking to repurpose an old laptop (or Windows tablet) with something a little less complex than Linux, or access your favorite messaging app while you’re working.
Or, most likely, you just want to play Clash of Clans.
American Megatrends’ Amiduos is an Android emulator for Windows that lets you do all that and more. It delivers a full Android environment, complete with mouse, keyboard and audio support. In fact, if you run it on a tablet, you’ll also be able to leverage the cameras, microphone, gyroscope, accelerometer and other features you might otherwise expect to have to forgo.
Amiduos runs Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean), though a company rep told me an upgrade to 5.0 (Lollipop) is “right around the corner” (probably in about two weeks).
Update 6/18/15:A Lollipop beta, Amiduos 2.0, is now available. If you’re already running the previous version, the developer has prepared upgrade instructions. In addition to bringing Lollipop to your desktop, Amiduos 2.0 adds compatibility with Android ART runtime and native support for 64-bit apps. It also promises improved A/V sync, better graphics and audio performance, and new APIs for Bluetooth LE, multi-networking, NFC and more.
I found installation very easy, and when you start Amiduos for the first time, it’s no different than booting, say, an Android tablet for the first time: You connect to Wi-Fi, then sign into (or create) your Google account.
Interestingly, Amiduos comes with the Amazon Appstore preloaded, but not Google Play. Thankfully, it’s fairly easy to install, and the emulator’s “Next steps” page provides all the instructions.
You can run Android full-screen or in a Window, and Amiduos even lets you pin Android apps to Windows’ Start menu if you plan to live mostly in the latter OS. It also supports gamepad controllers, allows for file sharing between both operating systems and even lets you link Windows media folders with their Android counterparts:

Amiduos sells for $10, though you can try it free for 30 days. That’s a pretty small price to pay for adding Android to your PC, but it’s worth noting that two competing emulators — Andy and BlueStacks — are free. Those have more of a gaming focus, though Andy matches a lot of Amiduos’ features. Ultimately, if you’re interested in this sort of thing, you’ll want to try both and see which one you like better.

A few months ago, we talked about the best way to semi-natively run Android on Windows-based PCs with AMIDuOS from American Megatrends. AMIDuOS, based on Android 4.4 KitKat ran surprisingly well, providing a relatively lag-free user experience and running all your favorite Android apps without even having to dual-boot.
Now, as promised, American Megatrends has updated AMIDuOS to run Android 5.0 Lollipop, albeit as a beta at this stage. New features include compatibility for the Android ART runtime, native 64-bit app support, better A/V synchronization, new APIs for Bluetooth LE and NFC, higher-performance graphics output and more. However, because it’s still a beta, it has a few bugs here and there, and it does tend to freeze up every so often, but when it doesn’t, it runs just as smoothly as KitKat did if not smoother. Animations are fluid, hardware support is good (tested on a Surface Pro 2), and gaming performance is more than acceptable in initial tests. I have yet to test battery performance but I’ll leave that for when the Lollipop update comes out of beta. Expect a full review when that happens.
AMIDuOS continues to prove that it is one of the best Android OSs for Windows-based PCs. For one, it installs just like any other Windows application, and it provides a very native-like user experience, and it only costs $9.99. If you need to run Android applications on your Windows PC, be it for work or pleasure, AMIDuOS is my recommendation. But here’s to hoping you won’t need to once Windows 10 is out and fully embraced by developers.

AMI seems to be a bit confused about what to call this program. In Windows, it calls itself DuOS. Sometimes it’s called DuOS-M. But the website calls it AMIDuOS. (The similarity to “Amadeus,” the name of a play about the Baroque composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, is, I’m told, unintentional.
You can run AMIDuOS, and Android, full-screen or in a window. I recommend the Normal Screen setting (which you’ll find in the DuOS Configuration Tool). It fills the entire screen, but leaves room for the basic Windows Exit and Minimize icons. Additional settings allow you to use your Windows libraries in Android, and even root your virtual device (and unroot it).
The two operating systems play well together. You can copy and paste text from one to the other, although this can get confusing; remember that Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V don’t work in Android. And you can set AMIDuOS to use your Windows libraries as their Android equivalent.

An update to the Your Phone app means certain Android phones can now run apps on Windows 10 PCs.
Certain Android phone users can now access Android mobile apps directly from their Windows 10 ($150 at Amazon) PC, thanks to an update to the Your Phone app that Microsoft rolled out to the general public in August. And if you’re part of the Windows Insider program, the latest Windows 10 build released Nov. 11 will let you run multiple Android mobile apps side by side on your Windows 10 PC and supported Samsung devices.
The update, first announced during the Samsung Unpacked event on Aug. 5, lets you pin your favorite Android mobile apps to the Taskbar or Start menu on your computer for quick and easy access. The apps will open in separate windows from the Your Phone app, letting you use them basically the same way you would on your phone — even if the Your Phone app isn’t open. The latest Windows 10 build lets you search for your previously pinned apps from within your Start app list, without needing to install the apps on your desktop or sign into them again.

What’s required to run Android apps on your Windows 10 PC?

Other than a Samsung Galaxy phone (at least for now), you’ll need a PC running the Windows 10 October 2019 Update or later. Check what version you’re running on your PC by going to Settings >Updates & Security >Check for update. (If you need to upgrade, you can still download Windows 10 for free .)
You’ll also need the latest version of the Your Phone app, and Link to Windows. On your phone, you’ll need to be running Android 9.0 or greater, with the Link to Windows integration.
Finally, your phone and computer must be on the same Wi-Fi network for the feature to work.

How to run Android apps on your Windows 10 PC
Once you have everything you need and your phone and computer are connected, the Your Phone app window should appear on your desktop. To open your Android apps on your desktop:
- Click the Apps shortcut from the menu on the left. You’ll see a list of all the apps on your phone.
- Click the app you want from the list, and it will open in a separate window on your PC.
Note that not every app will work with your mouse or keyboard, but many will.
And here are a few more tips for interacting with your mobile apps on your desktop with your mouse and keyboard, according to Microsoft:
- Single click will behave the same as any single touch/tap interaction.
- Right click anywhere on your phone screen to navigate to the previous page.
- Click and hold will behave the same as a tap/hold interaction.
